Nils Krone is a Professor of Paediatric Endocrinology at the University of Sheffield, where he leads Clinical Sciences. He is an Honorary Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist at Sheffield Children’s Hospital, where he heads the adrenal service and co-leads the DSD clinical service. He earned his MD from Ludwig-Maximilian’s University, Munich, Germany, working on genotype-phenotype correlation in congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). He trained in General Paediatrics and Paediatric Endocrinology at the University Children’s Hospital, Munich, and University of Kiel Children’s Hospital, Germany.
He worked as Wellcome Trust Clinician Scientist (2006-2011) and a Senior Clinical Lecturer (2011-2015) at the University of Birmingham, UK. He joined the University of Sheffield in 2015 and had a n additional research affiliation with the University of Dresden, Germany (2018-2021). His research interests include inborn errors of steroidogenesis, CAH, and differences of sex development (DSD). He is member of a large cross-institutional team investigating research questions pertinent to individuals with obesity and ultra-processed food.
He chairs the CaHASE2 steering committee, a multicentre study involving 25 centres in the UK and Ireland, assessing the health of adults with CAH. He leads and participates in studies using the I-DSD and I-CAH registries, examining healthcare provision differences and their clinical implications. Additionally, he leads a project on real-world data in children and young people with CAH in the UK and Ireland.
He holds several leadership roles, including Co-Director of the Wellcome Trust Forward North PhD Academy and Academic Lead for Paediatric Training at the University of Sheffield. He represents BSPED on the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health research consultation committee, is a member of the Clinical Committee, Society for Endocrinology, and the Care Quality Improvement Committee (SDM registries). He advises the 100,000 genomes newborn screening programme and serves as a medical advisor to the CAH support group (livingwithCAH).
