Background
The effects of butter consumption on lipid profiles and cardiovascular risk markers have been examined previously; however, its impact on patients receiving statin therapy has not been specifically evaluated. This study aimed to assess the effect of adding 30 g/day of butter for six weeks on lipid parameters and body composition in dyslipidemic adults treated with statins.
Methods
This interventional pilot study was conducted at Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center. Thirty adults (≥18 years) with established dyslipidemia on stable statin therapy were enrolled. Participants in the intervention group (n=17) were instructed by a registered dietitian to maintain their habitual diet with the sole modification of adding 30 g/day of butter for six weeks, while the control group (n=13) received no dietary intervention. Assessments were performed at baseline and after six weeks included blood pressure, lipid panel, insulin, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], apolipoproteins A and B, and body composition.
Results
At baseline, mean body weight in the intervention and control groups was 78.82±13.2 kg and 65.99±10.26 kg, respectively, with corresponding body fat percentages of 34.31±8.95% and 35.05±8.27%. Baseline lipid parameters were comparable between groups. In the intervention group, after six weeks, body weight increased significantly (+0.56 kg, p=0.007), while Lp(a) levels decreased significantly (−11.3 nmol/L, p=0.031). Non-significant reductions were observed in LDL cholesterol (−4.3 mg/dL), total cholesterol (−6.0 mg/dL), triglycerides (−9.1 mg/dL), apolipoprotein B (−3.0), and hs-CRP (−0.9 mg/L). In the control group, LDL cholesterol increased significantly (+6.6 mg/dL, p=0.017), and diastolic blood pressure decreased significantly (−4.7 mmHg, p=0.028).
Conclusions
In this pilot study of statin-treated adults with dyslipidemia, the addition of 30 g/day of butter for six weeks was associated with a modest reduction in Lp(a) levels and a small increase in body weight, without significant changes in other lipid parameters. These preliminary findings warrant confirmation in larger, randomized controlled trials to determine their clinical significance.
