Born in Athens; studied medicine at NKUA; specialized in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology at Lariboisière Hospital (University Paris VII) and Cochin Hospital (University Paris V); received the “Resident Étranger des Hôpitaux de Paris” prize (Collège de Médecine); “Assistant Étranger” of University Paris Nord; Visiting Fellow at Fogarty International Center (NCHD, NIH); elected Assistant (2002), Associate (2009), and Full Professor (2015) of Endocrinology (NKUA). Member of the Endocrine Society task force for the clinical practice guidelines on Hypothalamic Amenorrhea; author/co-author of over 360 ISI-indexed publications (h-index= 76; 22,500 citations at Google Scholar); served as editor of seven volumes of Annals of the NY Academy of Sciences, Associate Editor of HORMONES and Endocrine Connections, member of the International Advisory Panel of Endocrine Reviews and of the editorial boards of JES, Endocrine, Reviews in Endocrine and Metabolic Disorders; President of the Hellenic Endocrine Society, member of the European Society of Endocrinology (ESE) Executive Committee; Clinical Co-Chair of the Programme Organizing Committee of the 25th European Congress of Endocrinology (Istanbul, 2023); honorary Member of the Polish Society of Endocrinology; received twice the ESE Special Recognition Award. Major contributions: demonstration of CRH and its binding sites in the rodent and human ovary; demonstartion of the IL-6-induced human HPA axis stimulation; successful treatment of adolescent PCOS using non-anti-androgenic COCs; pioneer work on the insulinomimetic role of visfatin during pregnancy; persistence of adrenal androgen excess in PCOS menopausal women. His work focuses on reproductive endocrinology, pregnancy, menopause, PCOS, obesity, endocrine disruptors, and the interactions among stress, immune/inflammatory responses, and endocrine systems.
