Rafael Loch Batista, MD, PhD is an endocrinologist and physician–scientist at Hospital das Clínicas, University of São Paulo (HC-FMUSP), and the Institute of Cancer of the State of São Paulo (ICESP), Brazil. He earned his PhD in Endocrinology from the University of São Paulo (2017) under the mentorship of Prof. Berenice B. Mendonça and completed postdoctoral training in Medical Genetics at the McKusick–Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (2018–2019), mentored by Prof. Haig H. Kazazian Jr.
His translational research sits at the interface of endocrine oncology, neuroendocrinology, and medical genetics. He investigates molecular mechanisms and clinically actionable biomarkers in endocrine tumors—particularly pituitary and thyroid neoplasms—and explores mobile genetic elements (HERVs/LINE-1) as drivers and signatures of endocrine-related diseases. He also works on genetic mechanisms underlying 46,XY differences of sex development (DSD), integrating longitudinal clinical care with genomic diagnosis and variant interpretation.
Dr. Batista is supported by competitive funding, including awards from CNPq and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), and has received multiple Outstanding Abstract Awards from the Endocrine Society. He serves on the editorial boards of BMC Medical Genomics and The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism and is actively involved in mentoring trainees and building collaborative, data-driven programs in translational endocrinology.
