Dr. William (Bill) Rainey is a research endocrinologist and the Jerome W. Conn Professor in the Departments of Molecular & Integrative Physiology and Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan. He earned his PhD at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School, completed postdoctoral training in France, and then returned to UT Southwestern, where he served on the faculty for 15 years. He later directed the Medical College of Georgia Adrenal Research Program before joining the University of Michigan’s internationally recognized adrenal research team. For nearly four decades, Rainey and his laboratory have investigated the cellular, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms that regulate adrenal steroid hormone production and related adrenal diseases. He has authored more than 300 publications, providing foundational insight into the mechanisms controlling steroid hormone biosynthesis, transcriptional regulation of genes encoding steroidogenic enzymes, and the development of cell-based models for molecular studies of steroidogenic tissues. His recent research focuses on defining the mechanisms that regulate normal and excessive production of the adrenal steroid aldosterone, with particular emphasis on the hypertension-causing disorder primary aldosteronism (PA). To advance this work, his team developed a first-in-field approach that combines next-generation DNA and RNA sequencing from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded patient adrenal tissue, enabling multicenter studies of the cellular origins and genetic causes of PA.
