Dr. Elif A. Oral is Professor of Internal Medicine in the Division of Metabolism, Endocrinology, and Diabetes at the University of Michigan, where she directs the Atypical Diabetes Program and the Obesity and Metabolic Disorders Program. She received her MD from Istanbul University School of Medicine, completed residency training in Internal Medicine at Sinai Hospital in Detroit, and fellowship training in Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Diabetes at the National Institutes of Health. She also earned an MS in Clinical Research Design and Biostatistics from the University of Michigan.
An internationally recognized physician-scientist, Dr. Oral has dedicated her career to advancing the understanding and treatment of lipodystrophy, atypical diabetes, obesity, and related metabolic disorders. She played a key role in the development of metreleptin therapy, the first approved treatment for generalized lipodystrophy, and has led numerous NIH- and industry-funded clinical and translational research programs. Her work has helped define the biology of adipose tissue dysfunction, establish clinical guidelines, and develop innovative therapies that have transformed care for patients with rare metabolic diseases. She is a Fellow of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and recipient of the Global Genes Champion of Hope Award for Clinical Care.
