VerĂ³nica Mericq, MD is Full Professor at the Institute of Maternal and Child Research, University of Chile. Dr Mericq performed her residence in paediatrics and a fellowship in endocrinology at the University of Chile. Subsequently, Dr Mericq spent two years as a visiting fellow at the Developmental Endocrinology Branch of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD)(NIH), USA. She also undertook a short rotation at the Joslin Diabetes Clinic, Pediatric Department in Boston. Dr Mericq has participated in several financed research trials as co-investigator and as principal investigator. Her main research interest are human growth interactions with carbohydrate metabolism/insulin sensitivity. She has more than 200 publications in peer-review journals and has contributed seven chapters in endocrinology books. Dr Mericq is a member of ESPE, The Endocrine Society, SLEP, ALAD, ISPAD and Chilean Society of Endocrinology and Pediatrics. She participates in the editorial board of JCEM, hormone research in pediatrics and European J of endocrinology and other prestigious endocrine journals. Nowadays she is an associate editor of JCEM. She participated as a delegate from SLEP in the development of the consensus statements on children born small for gestational age , updated consensus of Silver Russel Syndrome, use of LHRH-a and insulin resistance in childhood. Dr Mericq has received several awards during her career, including Best Medical Student and Best Internship in her medical faculty, ALAD Young Investigator award, Award to the Research trajectory of Chilean Academy of Medicine, ESPE mid-career award, SLEP Cesar Bergada Prize, - Best researcher award SOCHED, Maestro of endocrinology award from SLEP, and ESPE outstanding clinician award in recognition to excellence, leadership and remarkable contribution in the field of Pediatric . She is the head of the endocrinology unit at the Institute of maternal and child research, faculty of medicine, University of Chile .
