Dr. Carolina Solis-Herrera is Chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where she also serves as Medical Director of the Endocrinology, Diabetes, Obesity, and Metabolism Clinics. She is the Founding Director of the Center for Excellence in Diabetes, a multidisciplinary initiative dedicated to advancing clinical care, research, and education.
Dr. Solis-Herrera received her medical degree from the Autonomous University of Baja California (UABC). She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at the General Hospital of the State of Sonora and her fellowship training in Endocrinology at the General Hospital of Mexico. She also earned a Diploma in Nutrition and Metabolic Diseases from the Siglo XXI National Medical Center. She subsequently completed a four-year Postdoctoral Fellowship in Clinical Research in Diabetes and Metabolism at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio under the mentorship of Professor Ralph DeFronzo, followed by additional residency training in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology in the United States. Dr. Solis-Herrera is board-certified in both Mexico and the United States.
In addition to her clinical leadership, Dr. Solis-Herrera maintains an active clinical and translational research program. Her primary areas of interest include the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes, mechanisms of action of novel antidiabetic therapies, and cardio-renal endocrinology. She has contributed to major scientific discoveries and participated in multiple landmark multicenter studies in these fields.
Dr. Solis-Herrera has authored more than 60 peer-reviewed publications and scientific abstracts, and her work has been presented at numerous national and international conferences. She is an active member of the Mexican Society of Nutrition and Endocrinology, the American Diabetes Association, the American Association of Clinical Endocrinology, and The Obesity Society. She has received multiple awards recognizing her contributions to research, education, and clinical care.
